Being 6’8ish means that you do not always fit in desks and such made for the average person. I am fortunate enough to work from home and found an great deal on a used architects desk on craigslist from Elizabeth at http://watermarkstudio.org/. It turns out Elizabeth is moving out of town and needed to find a new home for her vintage desk (solid oak). She gave me a fair price and I was happy to re-home it. The only down side was that the desk needed a new top. So off to we went to http://www.homeresource.org/ to find a new top. While we were there we found whole lanes of bowling alleys that they had removed from Liberty Lanes (we surmised from the defunct Liberty Lanes sign in the yard). We found a nice slab for a great price and off to the house it went. It was a fun project and now I have a HUGE desktop!

Hey Shawn! This is a beautiful desk! Resourceful, you are! My beau is 6’5” and dreams of revamping “up” all his kitchen counters. Being tall is not all that it’s cracked up to being, apparently.
Yes my dream kitchen has nothing below the counter and ever thing hanging.
Shawn that is so cool! It looks like it is incredibly heavy! I hope you have strong floors!
Annesa,
Why do short women always date tall or big guys!
E,
The slab is SOOO heavy. It is made out of quarter sawed (cut with the grain length wise). We are thinking about making our dinning room table out of some hardrock maple lanes!!! So much heavier but also alot prettier.
And opposites attract!
Hi Shawn!
It looks great! So glad that the desk has a happy home. I hope it works well for you. Nice job with the bowling lane too!
Can I ask how you stained it? We used a eco, water-based stain on ours and it didn’t work at all for keeping out stains as a kitchen counter/ bathroom counter.
Nice work!
Elizabeth
Elizabeth,
I used an epoxy type finish that I got at the local big box lumber place, the kind you would use for a bar top. Messy to work with and I was going to ask how you all had finished yours….. a little disappointing that your finish didn’t work out as we were thinking about doing more and I defiantly do not want the mess of that stuff again. Thanks again and good luck on your journeys.
Hey, Shawn it looks great. Very creative! Very nice. Love Ya, Da.
